  • Turbo perhaps

Heres one for discussion, would be grateful of any comments/ experiences. Since the hilux got a wee bit hot a while ago I'm now not getting any oil pressure. Whilst experimenting today I'm now getting plumes of smoke out of the exhaust. I think its the seals on the turbo that have gone(probably due to the over heating). Has anyone experinced similar symptoms, because changing the turbo seams like an expensive trail and error method.

    Cheers in advance

    Ian.

What colour smoke is it. Blue indicates Oil burning however if the seals are gone and blowing oil out of the exhaust side of the turbo then it might not burn so it wouldn't cause the smoke.

If it's passing oil into the intake then by removing the intake pipe from the turbo you should see a lot of oil in there - lots more than would be normally caused by blow by from the rocker cover pipe. If it pours out of the intake pipe I think you can pretty much say that the seals have gone. Also while that is off have a feel inside the turbo and feel if there is any play in the turbo vane shaft. There should be a little bit of play but not too much.

I think that the seals will need to be seriously shot to cause you no oil pressure. Are you sure that when the engine got hot that the pressure sender didn't get damaged.

    Cheers

      Cheers andy

The inlet piping removal is planed for tomorrow. When I said no oil pressure I meant low oil pressure. I might be wrong but in my experience pressure transudcers normally fail as apossed to mis-read, but I will check this too. Any body want to buy a naturally aspirated surf hehe

Are you losing oil level? If it got hot it could be a dry blown head gasket ie blowing from the exhaust to the inlet side, have you lost power, does it still drive? Silverlake auto salvage have a Surf in at the moment 2.4td also a 3.0td. If you fancy a second opinion PM me.
        How much!

Dont know if it is losing oil cause I've just done the filter and oil change and I dare not drive it now for fear of doing even more damage. Got to do a few more checks before I start tearing in to it. Cheers for the tip on silver lake will give them a ring and see if they will sell me a turbo cheap so I can experiment. Might just go and chop it in at a dealer for something else and hope they dont notice. That will f*** 'em.
