turbotimer and ariel

From reading the forum, the consensus appears to be that the turbotimer is a non-essential or useless piece of kit. Can I just disconnect mine at the plastic jack under the dash. It also has a red wire taped into it that disappears under the centre consul. Can I just snip it off and get rid of it as it clutters up the driver's side footwell. Also is it easy enough to fit a new electric ariel as mine is duff and I need to take the car through the car wash. Please advise on where to buy a new one. Great car. Great site.

As far as I'm concerned I'd take off the timer - it's also questionable if it's legal over here as you shouldn't leave an unattended car running and if you are in attendance then you can just sit in it with the engine running.

You can't just get a complete replacement aerial except from probably Toyota who will charge you a fortune, however generally the main problem is the gears and I think you can get a new qerial internals complete with gears that just fit in the existing aerial. I'm sure a few people have done this on the Forum.

Alternatively you could get a new electric aerial from a ICE shop however it will need some rewiring as the Toyota one uses 2 wires - 1 for up and 1 for down and also is powered by a relay box. Most aftermarket ones are single wire units (plus earth).

Why not turn it off?

My timer has various buttons on it. It seems that I can program how long it will allow the engine to run, turn it off completely, or set it to auto calculate.

Without knowing where it goes to I am not sure. See if you can trace it out. If it is connected to the Timer and is not part of the normal wiring loom I would say that it probably isn't essential but don't take my word for it.

Regarding the aerial, I had to replace mine a little while back, and picked up a generic power ariel from a car spares place. Works fine, but you need to run new cables for the power and actuator - as Lucky said, the Toyota wiring isn't compatible... I ran a pair of cables through a grommet in the top of the wheel-arch into the interior (it comes out behind the glove box which obviously needs to be removed) and scotch-locked one onto the radio's permanent-on positive, and another onto the actuator wire - on my "Toyota-ISO" convertion loom from Halfords, thats red and blue respectively (but check!!). Once I'd done that, everything was fine.

The only problems I've got now is the generic aerial's body-mount options (the chromed nut that fixes the aerial into the old hole in the wing) needs a spacer cos it currently looks a bit crap. Plus when I put the whole thing back together I think I damaged the aerial cable, cost reception's crap!! (Was alright before I screwed everything back together!!) I will eventually get round to having a look at that, if we ever get a weekend when the weather and I are both in the mood!!
