    LSD Oil

    HI.
LSD means Limited Slip Differential which also means that you need a kind of oil which is for LSDs. This oil seems to be similar to ATF but I'm not sure. Mine is colored red and seems to be of light viscosity just like ATF. That's about all that I know. I've got the same on my Surf and I too have a lot of questions to ask. Hope that some m8s have knowledge re this thing.
I've read somewhere that there are different types of LSDs. The most common are the clutch type and the conical type. The clutch type requires periodic replacement of the clutch plates. I'm also curious as to what type of LSD is fitted in the Surf.
    Hope to have helped.

Toy LSD's are the clutch pack type plates, and you'll be lucky to find one that still works properly on a 10 year old truck, but low milage surfs should be better, 100,000 mile V6 4Runner LSD didn't seem to do a lot.

They are good for towing on loose surfaces when in good nick, but don't help alot when offroading unless they are really tight, and you can give it a bit of welly, otherwise a locker will out perform them everytime.

        LSD Oil

Thanks for the info Tony. I'm sure Ian has the same questions as mine. Back to the clutch thing. How often do we need to replace the plates on these diffs. Lockers are way out of my budget mate. My Surf has 120,000 kms (75,000 miles) on the odometer. The Toyota dealers in my city won't service my unit cuz it's a grey market import and didn't come from them. Guess they don't want to encourage the importation of these used units from Japan.
Back to Ian's question. I'm sure you'll be able to find Limited Slip Differential Oils in motor shops.
        Thanks in advance mate.
