  • Track rod seized

Just been to have my tracking done.
The guy said that the bar had seized and he did not want to apply any more pressure for fear of cracking the ball joint.
Whilst it was up on the ramps he nipped next door to grab a mechanic from the diesel centre for his advice, he brought round a big set of stilsons and said that this would most likely free it, but he could not guarantee that it would not do any damage, so i decided against taking any chances and drove away.

Firstly, were they talking b0llocks or giving good advice.
Or should i have just let them have a go with the stilsons??

    It generally goes WD40-Stilsons-WD40-Heat-Stilsons-howl/squeak-WD40-sorted.

I aways free them off first before going to get an alignment, its less hassle. I've had Stilsons+2' of water pipe on the handle before and the ball joints survived OK.

Cant really call him a mechanic then, i would of heated the threads gently and then put a bit if WD40 on them as the outer thread heats up it expands and the WD40 can work its magic too i also put copper slip in mine as it stops them seizing this method has never let me down to date. especially on cast iron manifolds and turbo housings.

      Hope this helps

      Kind regards
      Chris.

I should have said that he did try heating as well with no joy, I was just about to put my hand on the offending part when he pulled me away to stop me (numpty) from burning myself.

Thanks for the advice, i`ve soaked all parts with wd40 and borrowed a stilson, busy tonight so i`ll give it a go in the morning.
