  • rear drag

    Hi All,
I`m having a problem of rolling resistance- especially after towing. Initially I thought it was because I raised the front too high and it was due to the front driveshaft angles. I lowered the front slightly and it improved things for a while. I did some heavyish towing this week and is now worse than ever.

Could this be the Load Sensing Prop. Valve on back axle causing the rear brakes to bind? I fitted 2 inch suspension springs to a saggy bum a while back but did`nt raise the bracket of the valve to compensate. I`ve just been out to measure the adjusting lever distance and it is within the min. max. limit at 123mm.

    Any suggestions?
    cheers,
    chris

Have you checked the clearance on the rear brake shoes. Could be if the clearance is very small that the lining material is expanding enough to cause it to bind when they are hot, as will happen if you are using the brakes more when towing.

      Brakes

No, I have`nt adjusted the brakes at all. When i next use the vehicle it still drags so it`s not `hot` brakes unless the shoes expand permanently. I think I will back the brakes off a bit for now to temporary stop the problem. The brakes are good, but I think it may be the sensor valve sensing a heavy load and sticking.
      thanks,

i reckon that's the first check, as it's after carrying weight.

          Problem solved

The N/S rear wheel was hard to turn when jacked up. I backed off the brakes until easy to turn with one hand. Moving to the drivers side rear,I could`nt move the wheel at all and discovered the handbrake pivot bracket that is attached to the hub back-plate was stuck. Nothing to do with the load sensor valve but I raised the bracket on the diff 2 inches anyway to match the suspension lift.
My truck now rolls down hills!

I also found that the handbrake pivot on mine was semi seized . If I had seen this thread earlier I would have suggested checking that first .

My old pickup and the 4Runner where both seized, Robs were as well, its almost normal!

I always squirt spray grease inside the little rubber gaiters on the back plates every time I'm under there.

Sorry, didn't see this thread either....
