Rear Window.

My rear window has stopped going up and down. The motor appears to be running in both diredtions but there is no drive. Does this mean the motor is farked? Do they have a metal sprocket or a nylon one. Could the teeth be worn away (there was no grinding or anything, it just ground to a halt halfway down).
I am trying to find as much info as possible before stripping it all down. If I need a new motor I might as well do it all at once.

Sounds like the plastic sprocket is detatched from the rubber/metal drive coupling. I repaired one last year by 'super gluing' them back together and holding them compressed in a vice for a couple of hours.

mine went the same way Phil and had to get a new motor I couldnt get 1 from a s c r a p p y down here and had to get 1 from nippon car spares in london i paid £53 inc P&P & vat

Vince. I have got the motor apart and removed the circlip from the shaft, but I cant get the sprocket off the shaft. I have degreased it by washing it in petrol three times. Do you recon I will get away with just glueing the side I can get to?

The small sprocket is fixed to the shaft. The white plastic sprocket should be bonded to the rubber coupling indicated in the pic, So the only parts you should have are the ones shown in the pic. Can you post a photo?

I have had two screwdrivers underneath it and if I lever any harder I will crack the casing. I was going to try some heat on it but I cant find the blow torch attachment for my Pyro-pen.

I already did. The BFH works every time I have already soake dthe perts in petrol. Now they are degreasing in a jar of surgical spirit. I have found my Araldite too so it looks like I am on a mission!

Right. The rear window motor is back in and whizzing up and down like a good'un. All the moving bits have been well greased, the window runners inside the tailgate have been cleaned and lubed.

A couple of points, in addition to what Vince posted, for anyone whose tailgate motor is whirring away but the window isn't moving.

The rubber wheel slips round inside the sprocket. Undo the clips that hold the gearbox lid on, remove the circlip from the shaft and whack it with the BFH. Degrease all the parts, remove any surface rust, smear araldite on the surfaces and use a large nut as a spacer to compress the rubber wheel until the glue has set, otherwise you won't get the circlip back on the end of the shaft. There are two holes in the metal disc that goes on top of the rubber wheel. I drilled through these and through the nylon sprocket and put a couple of CS nuts and bolts through. Grease it all up inside, renew the black sealant inside the lid and it should give a few more years service.

I cleaned inside the runners with a bit of old rag and sprayed them with Drylube silicon spray. It is a bugger to get off the glass but is as good as Back to Black for the rubbers. The rear window is like an upside down now.

For future reference, (if you can't find rubber and nylon lubricant,) silicone based furniture polish is excellent for making the window runners nice and slippery too.
