  • 4WD not working :(

    Hello friends,
I have just purchased a 1992 K reg Surf 2.4td, its only got 76000 KM (58000 miles) on the clock, I am quite happy with the beast apart from one thing....the 4WD system seems to have an issue. Every time I press the 4WD switch I hear a relay click and there is a clonk noise underneath...but the 4WD light only appears for 1 second !!!

Has anybody got any idea whats wrong? If I remove a vacuum pipe from a little relay/switch under the bonnet (next to the drivers front wing) and then try selecting 4WD the light comes on and stays on, but if I reconnect the vacuum pipe the 4WD only stays on for 1 second please advice
    Many thanks in advance

For the 4wd system to fully engage, and the indicator light on the dash to stay lit, you need to drive forwards or reverse a couple of feet.

Still doesnt work driving forward or in reverse has no affect, I got stuck in mud and tried selecting 4wd only the back wheels were spinning.

Heres some info for you to trouble shoot, probably easier than playing forum 'Tennis'!

Thanks for the advice and links. I have managed to sort it out it was very easy!
I removed an earth cable cleaned the contact and sprayed WD40 on it before refitiing it. The earth cable is on the drivers side inner wing. It worked for me. I can now switch from 2WD to 4WD using the switch.
