94 3.0 front wheel hubs

I am guessing that in the middle of the front wheels I have a freewheeling hub of some description. It doesn't have a selector so is it automatic. What does it do and when. How do I tell if it is working or not.
Sorry for the seeming stupid but this is my first real 4x4 and my knowledge is in engines and cylinder heads.
