hi gang..i hate describing noise, but noise is what i've got, so here goes..
ok, situation report.kinda pre noise breifing if you like..
new bf goodrich mud terrains fitted, 31x10:50x15..great tyres, but a bit of a pig for picking up stones in the treads..after parking on a gravel drive, sounds like you're pebbledashing the chassis on take-off..
now, i've got kinda used to that, and getting quite adept at jumping out and pinging the odd stubborn rogue out from the rubber..
oookay..now i've got a "stone" in the offside rear..but i haven't..trust me, i've been around the boots a plenty over a period of four days..no nails nor stone, but the horse's hoof clip clop is deffo there..with the window down its quite loud..does it in drive, does it in neutral, does it a ten mph and a whole lot quicker at 60..
on the way to work this morning i had a brainwave.close the window, and open the passenger one.guess what? its there too, just as loud..it now sounds as if i've got stones in the treads of both rears..there is nothing in the treads..
maybe unrelated, but now there is another sound..i noticed it on the return leg..crawling out of the gates i could hear a distinct "stiff brush on the inside of a metal dustbin lid" sound..and no, i haven't tried that..its similar to what i'd "imagine" binding brakes to sound like..not a squeak, more a light s****ing..it sounds like the rear again, but i've been made a fool of before, i'm open to suggestions.
it makes the noise intermittently..unlike the ticking, which is permanent, and speed related..its happened twice on pulling away whilst parked..i never use the handbrake..it goes, then returns, five seconds and its gone..at one point i thought it might have been throttle position related, as i could "hold" the noise on the foot pedal..butthere isn't really much, if any pattern.
the only thing i noticed, whilst driving with both windows open, and through a built up "echo zone" the noise seemed apparent left and right, but again, could be audial illusion..
my options for the grating would be rear shoes? recent slush might have had an effect of sorts..the "ticking"..well, unless the surfing brains can come up with anything else, i'd say it was a peculiarity of the tread pattern, but why the noise doesn't seem evident from the front is a bit of a puzzler..
obviously, although she drives fine, my concearn is that the noises are related and need some urgent remedial attention..just don't tell me its a bomb.
