I have play on the hinges of my SWC. When the spare is mounted it makes quite a racket. I have greased the pivots and this quietens it for a while. I guess I need a new carrier? Any out there? How much?

You probably know this, but there is a double catch on the carrier. It need a firm shove to engage the second lock position. Maybe yours is only on the first catch? Also, there are little holes in the back of the pivots for grease. I filled mine up and never have had a rattle or squeak. It swings easily too.

Thanks for the thoughts but:
I have greased the pivots, with a chainsaw grease gun, I have engaged second lock. It still rattles. If you hold the closing handle you can feel the play on the hinges when you lift it. It doesn't look like the hinges are servicable so I think I need a new carrier.

don't know how handy you are but before going down the new carrier route, have you tried drifting the pins out (from underneath I think) and getting some slightly fatter ones made up.
Shouldn't cost too much at local machine shop and will certainly be a load cheaper than a new carrier.

Failing that, I wonder if I could use a shim to prevent the rattle?
It is the upper hinge that is causing it. I can feel some play in it.

Here (hopefully) find a pic of three bits of s**** found in local caravan /trailer / boat chandlers bin....the upper two are useless for this application but the lower one is a "dead ringer" for the one I turned las year, only difference is the rust which o'course disappears as soon as you turn it to size...Cant remember exact spec, but I made up a copy turning setup so the one I removed from the rear wheel carrier acted as the guide...

After ages of assuming that the latch needed re adjusting on mine, and it still rattling, even though I replaced the rubber stopper, I realised yesterday that the reason my spare makes such a racket is the top and bottom carrier hinges have a shed load of play in them!!
So picking up from this thread, has anyone got any tips for removing the old pins?
Is it just a matter of remove the carrier and smack the buggery out of it with a ###### great hammer to try and drive the pins up and out?
Is it the pins that wear or the hinge mounts? i.e. an you just get new from Toyota? I've also noticed no matter what I do I always get rusty water marks from mine...

I have the same issue with one of our trucks. I am getting worried that as the carrier is rattling around on our rough roads that the wear rate will accelerate.
I would like to find a solution too.
With the number of Gen 3s (and probably Gen 2s) affected, I would have thought that an enterprising member with access to a machine shop should be able to get a cottage industry going supplying a repair kit.
