3rd Gen 4wd modes

Something that crops up once in a while is how the different 4wd modes work, I posted some info regarding the 3rd gen model in this regard here

On the subject of 3rd gen gearing. Have you noticed anything with the engine brakeing using H4 4wd and L on the auto box? There is little or no useful brakeing. If I use L4, there is plenty of engine brakeing, but on dry grassy slopes I would rather not lock up the center diff.

Now I remember in the 2nd gen H4 4wd in 1st gear was a crawler downhill...

I think the auto box is great offroad, uphill. But not so good downhill
