Have you checked that the window lock button on the drivers door panel is off?

Just a guess but sounds like the rear window "down" relay has failed. Use the search function as there's plenty of threads about this.

I've also had all sorts of problems with my 2nd gen rear window - seems to be one of the more common problems.

The machanics prevent the tailgate latch from popping up if the rear glass isn't all the way down, so untill you fix the window, you ain't getting that gate down. (this is because the glass will snap if you opened the gate with the glass up - it can't support it's own weight)

First thing, the window won't move if the rear wiper isn't parked correctly.
Try operating the rear wiper a couple of times to see if that helps.

If you remove the panel to get at the gubbins (techno talk) you can see the two wires that go to the motor (theres a two pin connecter in the wireing loom near the motor that you can seperate) . You can shove 12v direct into the motor through the connector to see if it moves. Needless to say, if you do this and the window tries to move up even more, reverse the wires.
This will show if the motor and the machanics are all ok.

If this works, then you have either a faulty relay box (there are posts around here on how to make repairs to it - Maplins sell the replacement relays but you need to be reasonably handy with a soldering iron to fix this), or one or more broken wires - probably in the bundle that enter the lower part of the tail-gate from the main chassis.

I have a dodgy wire in the bundle to the drivers door that means I can't use the internal rear window switch, or any of the other power window controls for that matter if the door is open. As you slowly close the door, you suddenly reach a point where everything works - a job for a warmer day tho'.

Once you get it working, you need to lubricate the window slides - again, posts around here on how to do it. In brief, Halfords sell a yellow can of silicone spray. With the window up, you in the back, and the panel removed, clean out the window slides as best you can and then spray in the silicone.

You will have to do this periodically - with mine it seems to be every 3 or 4 months but I do use the rear window a lot. It works great on the other windows as well.

            Hope that helps,
            Joe

Apparently they use the same motor in other toyota's. Check or remove the motor and try the local s****pers. I believe it's the nearside motor off cars like Celica's that fit. Again, use the search function as it has all been covered before.
