  • Steering Box Query

    Good morning all,

A query on behalf of a work colleague, his daughter (daughter in-law ? can't remember which) has recently bought a 2nd gen surf, think its a 2.4 '92. It recently failed its NCT (MOT) due to excessive play in the steering.
I know this model uses a steering box and was wondering if there is any method of adjusting this? Otherwise, will a standard hilux one fit (I know I can check the EPC for clues to this bit, but the wisdom of some members here is better than any EPC, crawl, crawl )

It's pi**ing with rain outside so I can't look at mine at the moment but here is my memory of the last car I had with a steering box. Generally there is an adjuster screw and locknut on the top of the bix which adjusts the end float in the box, however you need to be very carefull with this to avoid overtightening and causing tight spots. I would think the main cause of play in the steering unless the box has been run dry or the Surf has done a real lot of miles would be the idler bushes, which can be replaced and purchased through Milners for about 10 Euro or there about. Thats the problem with mine that I will have to fix before the next MOT _ i've got about 1 " of free play caused by this.

    Cheers
