lowered surf hard ride

I have just aquired my first Surf and in the process of ironing out a few things ie rectfying diy mods
The major problem is that on all four wheels there is no gap between the bump stops. The dampers are Rancho adjustable but it looks like the springs are too short giving a ride like a shopping trolly on cobbles.
Can anyone give me the correct info on original dampers and springs
or is it to do with the tortion bar? My knowlege on 4x4 is at best rudimentry
