I have a 1996 3.0 Surf which only has the 1 battery,maybe some are equipped with 2 to cope with all those Jap gadgets(?)(TVs etc...)Powered by ????

The standard (optional) twin battery setup on the Surf is not a split charge system. It actually parallels the two batteries together for higher current on the starting circuit. It is still a 12V system though unlike the twin battery system on some Landcruisers which is 24 volt.
If you already have twin batteries and want to convert to a split charge starting and leisure battery arrangement, you would need to change one of the batteries to a leisure type deep cycle one (Something like an Optima Blue). You would probably want to have a high current starting battery as well.
There is quite a lot of wiring involved in putting a split charge system in but if you are running a lot of add ons like fridge, TV etc then it would be well worth it.
