Turbo or not Turbo

My 2.4 SSR-G Turbo is in the local garage with a problem which has left brass filings in the oil and sump. A friend of mine says that there is a non turbo engine for sale close by but I'm not sure if it would replace mine should the worst come to the worst.

so if your assuming the turbo is duff and has shed these brass filings, a non turbo engine won't help as you'll still need a turbo.
You dont say if you engine works, brass filings in sump, clean them out, how big are they???

I can not think of wot would have brass inside an engine to break up . I think the turbo has all steel bearings , brass would not stand up to the temps , but I stand to be corrected ..... once corrected I will sit down again .

It's unlikely that the 'brass' is from the turbo. The only thing I can think off that's vaguley brass like would be the actual main bearing liners or the big end bearing liners. They're not brass but the swarf (filings, bits?) would look 'brassy'.

If there is something going wrong at the big end (in the sump, just where your filings are to be found) then I can only suggest

a) Take out large loan for engine (or holiday) or
b) become devoutly religious and start praying

Only brassy' bit i know of are the small end bushes, they are made of bronze with a steel backing. The noise will be pretty bad if one of these has broken up.

The turbo isn't the problem, the engine was making a loud tapping noise and after looking inside the top cover and finding nothing, I took it to the local garage who said there are brassy filings in the oil and sump. this may have been caused by the engine running without oil and wearing something out somewhere!!! So the question isn't can I change a turbo, but can I use a non turbo engine if I need to replace the tapping engine? or do I have to replace like for like?
