  • Tyre sizes?

    Hi,

I need some advice on tyre and wheel sizes please. I currently have 265/70/R15 tyres and am looking to replace with a meatier set. I thought that the first step would be to get some larger wheels, 16 or 17 inch, but after looking at loads of surfs with massive tyres on 15" rims it seems this isn't the case. Im a bit confused by the different sizings eg 30x9.50-15, compared to the size stated above? I would like to change the original wheels to modular wheels, will 15" be okay? Does anyone know of anywhere that i could find a decent package price on a set of 4new wheels (similar to the ones on the attached picture) and either some chunky BFG ATs, General Grabber ATs or some Yokohama Geo ATs?

    Thanks,

    Nick.

    Hi Nick,

Welcome to the forum! You and your band are far to good lookin' - only jealous.

Only joking. Tyres - couple of questions

Do you want to go bigger for aesthetical reasons or because you want more clearance off road???

You can put bigger overall diameter tyres on standard 15" rims allthough it will alter the accuracy of the speedo. The most common size I have seen (and got myself) is 31 x 10.5 x 15 which look good and give good clearance with a 2 inch lift. The 10.5 width is standard on the widebody versions and the 9.5 on the non widebody.

If you want to go mad then get some big rims and big tyres but you will need to get body and suspension lifts if you go really crazy.

Speak to someone like LA Supertrux (saved TonyN the shameless plug) http://www.supertrux.com/

Also some links on here you can trawl through.

    Hope this helps.

    Rich.

P.S. Here is a link for a tyre converter http://www.mahindrauk.com/

Not easy to convert/compare between the metric/imperial tyre sizes but I am sure there are charts/converters on the web somewhere but basically the systems are:

      265/70/R15
265 = is the tyre width in mm
70 = is the profile size i.e. rim to outside of tye as a percentage of the width so in this case 70% on 265mm
R15 = R is the speed rating and 15 is the wheel size in inches.

      30x9.50-15
30 = diameter of the tyre in inches
9.50 = width of the tyre in inches
15 = wheel size in inches

Also have a look at my page about my wheels/tyres which may help and has some links to where I got mine from at a good price:

Thanks to you both for the advice, and the kind welcome! Well i didn't think it was possible to look at so many tyres, i'm even seeing them in my sleep! I've found a set of vented mod 750s on the bronco/uswheels site which are just what i'm after, and tyres online.net have given me a quote of £74 a tyre for some Yokohama Geo ATs. I like the look of the General ATs and am waiting for formula 4x4 to get back to me. With regards to want i want from them, it's both aesthetical and for a small amount of clearance. I think that if i want a really big set, i'll find some cheaper modular wheels and keep a set of MTs on them in the garage until im getting seriously dirty. Thanks both for your help.
