wanting to engage in 4wd problem

Hi I'm new,

I'm from canada and I just bought a 90 Surf 2.4. Love the truck but one small problem. When in 2wd and accelerating quickly the 4wd light will flick on and click momentarily as if the 4wd dirve were being engaged. Then there will be a clunk and sometimes a steel on steel rubbing sound right after. This truck had been sitting for at least a year before I got it and so I figured that the solenoid that engages the ring gear sleeve in the T Case maybe sticking. So I tried to engage and dis-engage the 4wd drive numerous times a day for a couple of days and the problem stopped. After about a week of driving it has come back. It doesn't do it in 4wd. I had a similar problem with my BJ71 and I had to replace the ring gear because whoever owned it before me engaged the truck into 4wd while it was moving (Not good).

Does anyone have any ideas before I take the T case apart????

Maybe the switch is broken, and its shorting out and trying to switch 4wd on.

Yeh that could be except it still engages properly when I push it in. 4wd drive comes on and stays on.

Before you start pulling the transfer case apart undo the screws and lift centre console up enough to gain access to the wiring for the switch and unplug at the small two pin plug.This will help identify any fault with the switch if poblem stops.

I'll try that today. I noticed some kind of module behind the Tcase what is it?If that doesn't work do you know of anygood Mechs. that I could talk to? The local Toyota dealer is not fond of these right hand drives I bring into Canada.

Its the electric soloind to selecting 4wd, You can remove this, and pull on the rod to select it manually. Once this selected you can see if the ADD stuff is working on the axle.

Ok so i have checked the 4wd switch, it's 100%. The Hi 4wd sensor on the transfer case is fine. The ADD system is 100%. I'm wondering if my 4Wd computer may be defective? I'm still in the process of testing for shorts or anything in the wiring itself. One thing I do know is that when the 4WD computer is disconnected the system doesn't engage itself, which means the transfer case isn't sliding into 4wd on its own. Any other theories out there?
