Rear Diff??

Hi

This is a quick question - is the rear axle transmission box (where the driveshaft terminates and the rear axles go out to the wheels - evidently not sure of the correct name - probably the rear diff?) a troublesome area or a fit and forget part.

Is there a test for making sure the oil is topped up in there and should it be hot after a journey?

Just checking….cos I would hate for it all to lock up or something cos I neglected it.

Yep, its the rear diff (as its a 4x4 you have a front one too).
Generally troublefree (altough like any component, not guaranteed to last forever and a small number have had to renew theirs)
Don't recall the oil change interval but its not very frequent, certainly less than annually anyway. Simple drain and fill plug arrangement and apart from the oil changes virtually no other maintenance is usually required, correct fill level is when you can't get any more oil in! The filler plug is on the side, so when you have enough oil in it will flow back out the filler plug.
Only other maintenance point is to ensure the breather plug fitted at the top in not blocked, if you remove it you should be able to blow thru it.

Yes it does get warm to hot when driving

There are two bolts on the rear diff,
a drain plug at base and fill plug 1/2-way up. The diff oil should be upto the bottom of the top fill-plug. If you stick a finger in you should be able to touch oil, or it should dribble out when you undo the fill-plug.
