Do a search on aircon on this site and you will find lots of explaination and suggested places to go. Basically if it's still got the original type of gas it is now considered unenvironmentally friendly, you need to find an aircon specialist who will suck out the remaining gas and fit new connectors to suit the modern gas, pressure test it and then fill it with modern gas. I got this done on mine for about �100 but have seen reports on here of paying less and more.
I don't have experience of sourcing exhausts for the surf but do a search and I'm sure you can find the answers you need. Searching on here will get you a much quicker answer than posting a question and waiting.

I had two huge splits in mine before the last little box, bought a new (for me) mid box and rear pipe and then couldnt get the nuts off. I got fed up trying so gunked up the splits with Hermatite exhaust paste and annoyingly its houlding up quite well

i had same problem, they told me i cant have r12 i neede the new r134a sstem .. what a lot of tosh ... you can buy the gas yourself its the r413 replacement goes straight in .. kit gas diy around 50 quid , dont let em rip you off
