  • Propshaft woes

Tracing the source of my vibration woes on a 94 KZN130 which gets steadily worse as I go faster, I (after reading a few posts on here) decided to check the propshaft.

On removal, the rear cross moved up and down freely and smoothly, but left to right was stiff with a massive notch in the central position. The front cross was also free and smooth up and down, with left and right having a very slight notch. The nipples have been greased to no effect.

This to me says its time to replace them both. Doing a search on here shows a number of people who've had similar problems and you seem to have swapped the universal joints for £10 each from Milners. However, I don't see how its done as it looks like a sealed unit. My Cortina has pins etc that you can remove to do this, but I don't see anything on the Surf.

Are all our propshafts the same or are some completely sealed? If they're the same, how do you service them.

    Thanks.

The joints have circlips on the bottom of the caps, on the insides of the yokes, pop them off and then change as usual.

Don't buy the Milners ones, they are ungreasable with normal grease guns. The nipple comes between the caps, and you can't get the grease gun end on.

When asked about it, Mr Milner said "yeah, we know." Thanks!

Roughtrax ones are a couple of £ more, but far better.

i'll have to try them next, replaced rear bearing a couple months ago with one from milners and noticed they'd changed design, the old style used to have the nipple on top of the cross as toyota part. been using milners for about 12 years, trouble free untill recently, above uj and had two oil filters leak from the rolled joint at the base have they started to cut corners? still very helpful on the phone though,

Yeah, they are helpful, and friendly, it you tell them of a problem they normally send you another one no trouble, but this is OK on your own car, but I don't want people coming back to me cos a part I've fitted is rubbish.

I admire their race truck, really good to see, My dream is in a few years to be running a Milners 'Team 4x4toys' truck. But need to make a bit more cash playing with normal cars first.

Don't really want to make this a 'run Milners parts' down thread, but......

I've used them plenty of times, but recently we had a couple of crap rear bearings, unhelpful advise on the CV's, some wipers that were really rubbish and a 6 month old rad cap that failed.

JimL's failed cam belt scared the crap outta me, I don't want to be replacing peoples engines for them out of my bank account.

I'd rather be safe than sorry when working on other peoples cars, and Roughtrax have never let me down, and have a good relationship with them. So I use them or Toyota.

I'll fit Milners parts if people bring them with them, but it comes down to personal opinion and what you feel happy with at the end of the day.

They seem to have crossed the fine line between cheap and crap for some stuff. I hope to proved wrong..........

Sorry to bring this back to life, but if anyone can provide more info.....

The Roughtrax UJ's I thought were still cheap enough at £15 front and £15 rear, so my plan was to buy a couple of these and take them to a local garage for them to fit for me - didn't want to do it myself as I don't know how.

Anyway, local garage when I booked it in informed me that doing it this way would be unsafe as they are machine-pressed in. They normally remove the prop and take it to an engineering firm who recondition the whole lot for about £150, including spinning it up and re-balancing it.

So what thoughts have ye fellow Surfers got?

Nah, if you match-mark all the parts, and make sure it goes back the same way, it shouldn't need rebalencing (as long as it was OK in the first place) the caps are pressed in, after you remove the inner circlips, but you can do it in a vise or with a big g-clamp and various sized sockets.
