  • 1992 Surf 2.4 TD EFi SPEEDO

Having bought my first import I have no idea to start when comes around to finding parts. I'm desperately looking for a gearbox to convert kph to mph and have searched this site with no luck so far.

Does anyone know where i can get a gearbox to convert my speedo? Has anyone fitted one on a import 2LTE and had any problems?

Before I give this car to my wife i need to make sure it's okay for her to drive, especially going past speed cameras without getting in trouble or causing other road users any hassle.

I live near Heathrow, does anyone know of anyone who can supply me with a speedo conversion gearbox?

    Thanks, Amit

    Amit,

Alot of the vehicles here of that type have had their speedo faces changed, rather than had the gearing changed.

You will see on Ebay that there are lots of speedo faces, they are perfectly adequate.

      Thanks Trev,

I've noticed when searching that a lot of people have done that. I would still prefer to get a speedo conversion box so that the milage on the clock counts up in mile and not kilometres. A conversion box will allow me that conveniance.

Does anyone know a reliable source where I can get a speedo conversion gearbox to fit on the above model?

Has anybody fitted one of these gearboxes and found any trouble in how it affects the gearchange for an auto transmission? I presume it would affect electric speedos (also having to fiddle with position of speed indicator needle) but how would it affect a speedo running from a cable?

And finally am I chasing my tail...would this Surf have a speedo cable or be electronic...how would I find out to be sure?

So many questions from poor newbie Surf owner, pleeeease help

Personally, I prefer the gearbox converter, this way to get your mileometer and trip reading in miles, plus you get to keep the dash looking original, lots of the dash faces don't quite match the other dials.

They do when you get flashy White Gauges

Especially those installed by a highly skilled mechanical wizard

I've called a few places mentioned on this forum regarding speedo coverters. However the response I've had is a bit rubbish.

The main problems when i call up are the person on the other end of the phone is adamant that my car has a mechanical speedo and suggest i buy his product for £70. When i call someone else they are positive that it's an electrical speedo and i should spend £60 odd with them. ALL of the people i've spoken to only ask the year of my car and don't seem too bothered about what particular model etc it is.

Most annoyingly none of them seem to know or can't suggest how I'm able to distinguish the speedo type myself.

Slim has kindly suggested that "if the needle sits on a pin when the truck is at stand still then its a electrical if not mechanical!!!!!!". Is there a more sure way to find out because i don't want to part with cash (or time) unless i'm sure.

                Thanks...

If you take the instrument binnacle out and look on the back, if you only have wires your speedo is electronic and if you have a mechanical cable its mechanical
                  Time consuming but also FREE!

Great Tim thanks, I shall do that on Friday... One last thing though, can anyone recommend a reliable place they've used for speedo converters?

                    Regards..
