  • Free Wheeling Hubs??

    Hi all,

Some questions, before I go fiddling with me bearings....

What is a free wheeling hub ?
    What is it for ?
How / why does it work ?
    Have I got them ?
How do I get it off ??

    Thanks for now
    Jim

1/ its a hub that lets you disconnect drive to the front wheels at the hub.
2/ by disconnecting drive in the hub, you NO drag from front drive line, giving you the same rolling resistance and a 2wd truck and associated MPG.
3/ turning the key on the hub (manual version, auto's are available but unreliable)engauges/disengauges drive from the hub to the front driveshaft.
4/ not standard if you have ADD, which 2nd Gens should have, You'll have a solid drive flange which replaces the free whelling hub.
5/ six nuts on cone washers around the hub.

People retro fit them to run bigger CV angles (when jacking torsion bars more then 1 1/2 " ) or to stop the front diff turning to save MPG and wear. (ADD only disconnects one side of the front axle, so the diff and short side drive shaft still turn when going along.)
