  • any tips on removing old freehub stud

Anyone got any tips on removing a snapped off stud from hub.
Its not a hub stud, but one that holds the flange/or free wheel hub on.
mine snapped about 5mm from end, so still got a fair bit protruding,

wondering if anyone has any nifty tips for unscrewing the old one, as its bound to be tricky...

Mole grips on the stud, or cut a slot across to use a screw driver.

You probably need an extractor, they have a left hand thread spiral, you drill a hole in the stud, then wind the extractor in till it jams and undoes the bolt. But its probably tight, and you'll only get a small extractor in there which might break, so try the other method...

Carefully center dot the stud in the middle, slowely drill it out using slightly bigger drills each time till you just left with the thread of the stud left in the hole, which you can pull out with some neddle nose pliers.

You can run a tap down the hole to repair small damage, or just heli-coil it after if things get out of hand.

I got a set of these when a stud sheered off on my motorbike. They worked a treat. Stud Extractors

        thanks Guys

I think I have broken most of my small extractors as well as the T-bar...

I will try the screw slot method - thats a good idea

        those stud-extractors look nifty too

done the job - thanks TonyN

          thanks for hints and tips

I tied one of yours first TonyN,
used angle grinder and cut a slot in end of broken stud,
tried screw driver - not enough leverage
so got a chisel, that has a hex end, fitted socket over that and used bar for leverage - it came undone no problem

fitted new one, then fitted shiney new warn locking hubs

great job done - nice for something to go well for a change
