Just reading some info which confused me. I have been told that an auto box is best for towing (2 horses). Now I see some saying that a manual box is best. Can anyone help clear this up?

There is nothing in it, its just your own preferences, both have advantages and disavantages. Either will do the job fine.
Trouble with some 'experts' is that if they prefer one thing, they won't just leave it at that, they'll run the other option down to justify themselves instead of just leaving it alone.
Deep huh? not bad for 7am!!!
Auto's are smoother on the car and trailer without any effort on the drivers part, but can overheat is abused/overloaded. Manual is more controllable but you can roast the clutch if inexperianced or overloaded.
Your main problem will be finding a manual! Auto's are more plentiful. Definatly try and get a 3.0 though, you won't regret the extra torque when towing.4x4toys.co.uk - Keeping you on and off the road...

As Tony said both have thier advantages, towing with an auto is more relaxing - switch on the ECT and let the gearbox downchange before you forget then find yourself in the wrong gear too late.
Either box will tow the same weight its just autos require less concentration on your gears leaving you to concentrate on the task at hand - besides manuals are quite rare.Tim

Towing
One advantage of a manual is the sensitivity of backing up by slipping the clutch when inching up to the towbar. On a grass field with humps and lumps the auto can be a bit fierce. Use of the handrake if ofen needed.
The auto box wins hands down if you ever need to do a hill start as all the torque is there at once and there is no danger of running back. Inching along in a traffic jam is no problem with an auto - even up a slope.
My own opinion is that an additional ATF cooler is a wise investment as it keeps the gearbox cool and prevents xs heat going into the radiator.
