  • 80,000 km service and extras

    Hello,
I have just had my 1991 3.0 V6 serviced for the first time - it has 135,000 km's on the clock and I have no service history - so, I put it in for a service and they recommended the "80,000 km" service and a timing belt change.

I dropped the vehicle off this morning at 08:30, picked it up at 15:30 and parted with £377 - now, that seemed a bit steep to me - does this sound right to anybody on this forum ? I think it included oil and filter change, brake shoe cleaner ?? LABOUR - oh, and a timing belt ...

I was also concerned about a couple of other things that I asked them to check :-

1 - excessive heat being felt through the centre bulk carpet, by my left foot
2 - a bad grinding/creaking when turning on full lock

The first I have been told has been checked, and the gearbox oil is fine, and that the heat is normal due to such a large "lump" ( I translated to engine ) in my 4-Runner.

The second was dryed out steering ends ? - they have greased them up.

Anyway, the creaking / grinding has stopped so that is ok.

I know that I am ranting, it's just that I was shocked by the bill - so I'm gonna use this great resource more often and try and learn how to do things myself now.

Does anybody know a good value mechanic who knows how these vehicles need to be maintained in the Harpenden, Luton, St. Albans area, or even Coventry ?

    Thanks.
    Neil.

I live in Luton and I am about to do a general service (oil, oil filter, diesel filter. air filter and grease points, steering end stops). If you want to come and see you are welcome. I know yours is a gas guzzler and mine is a diesel but the basics will be the same.
As a DIY job, what you had done at the garage would have cost no more than £50.00 for filters, belts etc. It's the labour/service charges that bump it up. Just a thought. They may have changed your other fluids. ATX oil, diff and transfer box oil with pucka stuff so that would cost by the time they put their mar-up on.
My other half has got used to me smelling like a garage now.
      It's only a hobby!

They all get hot under the tranny tunnel cos of the gearbox, even the manual trucks, but especially the V6's as the cross over pipe runs behind the block, against the lower bulkhead.

Your noise is just a dab of grease needed on the steering stops

The labours about right for a normal garage if they've done a proper service (with is a matter of opinion) and cam belt change, our local garage in the village charges getting on for £300 for a days work. I'd allow most of the day to do a proper service and cam belt change, but I don't have the front to charge that much so people get it cheaper! ATM

Well thanks for the info - looks like I'm on my way to Basingstoke for any work that needs doing ...

I had a look at the website and saw reference to "Fuel Cat" - now seeing as I'm driving a guzzler, is fitting this going to make much difference ? Sounds good if it can.

                          Cor, sounds a bit steep...

I'm paying £135 for my truck's regular 5000mile service, filters, oil & coolant, general check and greasing etc at M A Engineering in Bristol - 0117 941 8500
(recommended by the guy at Roughtrax in Keynesham).

He's also undersealing it for me this afternoon for £50 too, which is nice
