  • Help Needed - Replacing Front Shock Absorber

    Hi Guys,

Need to replace one of the front shock absorbers on my 3.0 TD 2nd Gen (KZN130). I've searched the forum and have only been able to find advice on the best type and on suspension lifts etc. However, what I'd like to know is:

How easy is this to do?

. . How long should it take?

    . . What tools will I need?

    . What's the procedure?

Also, I was going to just order the shock on its own. Should I be ordering any boots/bushes etc?

    Hope someone can help.

    Many thanks

    Rob

How easy is this to do? Quite

. . How long should it take? 20-30 mins a side

. . What tools will I need? A couple of spanners

. What's the procedure? jack car up undo bolts on adjuster houseing
then undo nut on top of shock then undo bottom bolt and pull out shock

Also, I was going to just order the shock on its own. Should I be ordering any boots/bushes etc?

        Help!!

I did see some references to the old forum, but unfortunately I don't have access.

Just need to know if this is something I can tackle myself.

If these are adjustable shocks that came with the SURF ask if anyone has some spare ones as TOYOTA aint cheap around £180 each, If you are not confident in fitting a new one/ones get over to Pickering next saturday & The GANG in the Tents will help you.

Really want to, but Surf is in for retest next Sat and I need to have shocks done before then!! If it passes on Saturday morning I might make it to Langdale Quest in the afternoon!

                OK - Simpler question...

Have found the procedure documented in the Haynes manual for the 4Runner. Looks dead easy!

Question then is - How similar is the front suspension on a '93 4Runner and 2nd Gen Surf?

                    Thanks m8.

Will now approach this with confidense.

Shox arrived from RoughTrax this morning (along with a few other goodies! ). Rough Trax are superb. Barry rang me to check my order (placed on-line) and offerred some useful advice.

                    Thanks,

                    Rob

One done - One to go...

T'was suprisingly easy!! To think, I could have been giving a garage some of my hard earned readies as well.

Thought I'd attach a couple of pics of the before and after:

yes - guess it is easy when the shock isnt seized to the lower control arm, and needs drilling and chiseling to remove!
wish my trucks control arms were in the condition your trucks are, mine are all rusty...
