  • Routine greasing and stuff......

Is there a recommended greasing schedule for stuff on the Surf? I know there's something on the sun visor, but I can't uderstand Japanese!!

Are there things and places to squirt a bit of grease in eevry so often?

Does anything special have to be done after taking the beast offroad??

On a simiar point, does anyone have a translation for the sun visor thing?

    Cheers

    Dave

ive just been trying to grease my ball joints today, bought grease, bought nipply things, bought a grease gun. i would have thought the primary function of a grease gun was to pump grease but mine was just a messy useless lump of aluminium that didnt pump anything anywhere, and it took me about 2 hours to realise that this useless piece of crap was the reason the grease wasnt going into the damn thing.
serves me right for buying a grease gun off e-bay

bugger double post see what kind of day im having?

Did you bleed the gun after filling it?

If you need a greasegun then buy a quality one to start with. The cheapies are rubbish.I got a McNaught one hand operated gun but ended up with a mess the first time I used it.No grease in nipples but plenty everywhere else. The gun operates in two ways. One with cartridges and the other bulk grease where you just fill the gun. When assembled they are set up for cartridges and require the seals to be removed and replaced in the reverse direction for the gun to work properly. These also have a bleed nipple on top of gun.

ok i now have a working grease gun from rs engineering (nice) but when i try to grease the damn things it just seems to "spill" over the nipple, am i trying to overfill?
i must be doing something wrong because the rubber bellow thingys on my ball joints (nice techspeak) seem really empty, is there an outlet i need to unscrew on the other end of the bellows or something?

much more o this and im gonna get as my sig

is it possible that your grease nipples are blocked and you require new ones....?????

The proceedure I use for nipple greasing is as follows:

                        1) Brass wire brush around the nipple to clean off grit and mud.
                        2) Clean off with a rag.
                        3) Break the seal first by depressing the ball with a bradawl or sharp point to make sure it's free.
                        4) Lock the nozzle on hard and pump away. You'll hear the grease 'crack' going in and see it overflow out on some UJ's. Stop pumping when you see overflow on UJ's. Don't overfill the ball joints the boot might split- stop pumping when the boot expands a little.
                        5) Wipe off any excess overflow grease and smear it onto you steering bump stops.

Buying a quality grease gun is good advice- every Surf owner should have one. The best type are those that take a cartridges of Moly and have angled nozzle. Make sure you're using the right type of grease- grey Moly for most joints.
