Transfer box oil fill question

Hi
strange goings on.

the car is on level ground and if I poke my finger through I can’t feel the oil at the same level as the bottom of the filler hole. Yet, when I try and add more oil it pours out the hole.

what am I doing wrong.

also it’s difficult to get much assistance from gravity in getting the

What filler hole? The ATF is filled via the dipstick tube.
