  • Wing mirror glass

This was one of those disasters that I try to avoid...annoying. The plastic case holding the left wing mirror was knocked out of my surf and the glass shattered. No problem. I ordered another glass. I was expecting the glass to come with the plastic holder as I could see it'd be hard to slot the waffer thin glass in the existing holder... no such luck. After struggling with the glass and holder, it broke, ouch. So in order to help me avoid running up a full service style bill on a left wing mirror glass, does anyone know how the hell you fit the sodding thing?

Yeh - try not to push the edges - put the pressure onto where the holder is - we now have a mirror without electrics and a flappy bit of seal which superglue wouldn't fix but I can't afford the complete new assembly so it takes two of us to get it in the right position b4 driving off!
The dealership were really helpful with instructions though! Hope this helps.

Without warming the plastic first, with a heat gun, you'll crack it for sure. Fit one side and warm the the other edge. Don't cook it. The lip goes over the glass easily.

I used an electric heat gun, the type you use to strip paint. You don't need alot of heat, the black plastic surround reacts quickly to heat - it would be easy to melt it and ruin in. Insert the mirror in to two edges and start heating the plastic. It becomes pliable and the remaining edges pop over the mirror easily.

                      Hi Ed..

I will try the heat gun on Monday when the replacement mirror arrives. Deep down I knew a heat gun was the way to go but I thought I would try it in hot water first. Hot water just dosen't seem to soften it enough for the rubber to lip over. As stated I will post with photos the whole job of replacement as this can be a very costly affair for the un informed on what appears to be a straight forward job.
