  • Splined thingymagig

    Hi Guy's,

This is probably going to be a silly question but here goes anyway. Has anyone tried to take off a wheel and found out that they have a wheel nut that cannot be removed, it is like a splined thingymagig that cannot be removed with the normal wheel brace.I have had the Surf to bits looking for anything to get the affending splined thingymagig off but there is nothing. Does anyone know where I can get something to get them off from, or even if one exists.

    Please help!!!

Dont matter, just figured it out. Locking wheel nuts without the locking bit. Still no way of getting them off though. I knew it was going to be a silly question.

search for an old socket and a large mallet...

Make sure that you have a new stud, just in case...

Hammer the 'old' socket over the top... then twist it off...

Hopefully, the locking nut will come off without damage to the stud...

Obviously, any rough treatment of your own toy is at your own risk...

There are some funky sockets for just this dilemna...
They have teeth cut into them on the inside... as you undo them they cut into the offending nut...

If you still can't get it off try a socket(ideally an old one)which is a nice tight fit so tight that you have to hammer it on so less chance of slipping and just wip it of with the ratchet, you might knacker the locking nut but at least it will be off.

or big chisel and hammer, put chisel on side of nut and hit down, done this many times in the past.

How long have you got your Surf? Did the seller give you the key for the lock nuts? If not, try your tool kit, ashtrays, glove box, door pockets, even under seats - it may be in there somewhere.

It may just be easier to buy 4 new plain nuts (who steals wheels these days?), drive to a friendly garage and get them to use their super-expensive gear and years of hard-earned experience to take off the lock nuts for you. They might not even charge you if you send your better half down ...

My key & lock nuts were all destroyed (by some one else, I'd point out), and luckily with lots of WD40 and banging with a hammer/extension/key, they did free off, but it was a tough job.

              Good luck,

I've had it for about 9 months now but hardly use it as it is a second car, I didnt notice that it had locking weel nuts on due to the fact there was no top or key part of the nut so never looked into it (lucky I've not had a puncture or what). I will take it to my local garage and see if they can get them out, but will look around the car again to see if the socket thing is in there first.

                Thanks

I use those and they are a good bit of kit, you can use them for rounded off wheel nuts too not just locking nuts but you will need a vice to remove the old nut from the socket.
                    Cheers
