    Regarding "Stickys",greasing suspension ball joints,at the moment the grease holes are bunged with a bolt, does any one know what size thread these bolts are and what type grease nipples i require i.e straight or angled.

    I believe they are 6mm and 90 angled

      i just "borrow" an appropriate one from the prop shaft, then just put it back when done and replace the blanking bolt in the ball joint.

        I have straight ones on top ball joints.These are permanently installed and can be covered with a small rubber cap such as the ones used for blocking vacuum lines.The bottom are 45 deg and are also permanently installed.They are 6mm.

            I tried to "borrow" an angled grease fitting from the driveline but the fitting did not come loose - it turned easily but did not come free of the universal joint.

            Was I doing something wrong? Also, when greasing the ball joints today I noticed that the upper driver side boot has a tiny hole in it. Is replacing this boot going to test my automotive know-how?

              Original Toy grease nipples on the UJ's are pressed in, they have no thread!

              You just need a ball joint splitter and some spanners and a crowbar, tis' easy. (ish)

                CV Boot Replacement

                I've just had a boot changed.

                Bought one from Millers but my grease monkey found it easier to use a universal boot that slips over the CV joint.

                you can either use this info or offer to buy the unused boot.

                  Sounds painful! At a department store yesterday I bought a package of three angled grease fittings for 255 yen (US$2.43). Will grease the lower ball joints (those needing the angled fittings) today.

                  I am hoping that the pinhole in the upper driver side ball joint cover may be fixed first by 1) cleaning the area around the hole, and then 2) applying a drop of Super Glue or something similar. It is not torn; it merely has a tiny hole.

                  Everyday, something on the Surf!

                    Jeff. When i removed my pitman arm recently, i tore two little holes in the boot. Icleaned them up and stuck a bit of superglue in them. Left it a few hours just to make sure it set right. Absolutley fine now. Easier than getting a new boot or balljoint

                      Super glue can be a bit brittle when cured, I'm not sure how long the repair would last in this location.

                      I have found that after good cleaning (ie degreasing) ordinary silicone sealer makes a very effective repair on ball-joint boots. make sure to smear a bit extra on the outside around the hole.
                      I've had such repairs last over 7 years on a Vectra, probably would have been longer but the car got totalled!

                      The silicone is flexible enough to withstand all the movement on the ball-joint. I've even been know to smear a thin coat of it into and over the cracks in CV boots which are starting to perish (but before they actually split or tear), extends the life of them nicely

                          all this talk of greasing stuff, i just bought a grease gun and a pack of 6mm nipples. got home to find the nozzle is missing. bobbins. they also had rembrant 2 grease (ep2), i take it this is no good for ujs either.. since i have to go back there...

                            balls. you just reminded me I apparently have a CV boot split so says mechanic and so says grease that flicks onto tyre (i know dont leave it there). the thing is i cant see it so im gonna degrease and try silicone ready for the next Plains jaunt
