Narrow tyres

Hi there,

just came back from Tanzania from Safari. Interestingly, companies and individuals there almost only use the old Toyota Landcrusiser Hardtop with 7 seats. It seems to be by far the most popular car there, miles ahead of the Defender. Only a few Surfs could be seen, but not really in remote areas.

Anyways, I noticed that the tyres they use are really narrow, with zigzag patterns and big chunky profiles on the side of the tyres. When asking the guy who drove our car, he said that the narrow tyres cut through the mud a lot better, but that the wide tyres are better on roads.

So is anybody here using narrow tyres? Does it make a lot of difference? I would be curious to find out...

when you next watch WRC rallying on tv, look at the wheels
TARMAC=wider tyres,low profile
LOOSE SURFACES/GRAVEL=slightly narrower with deeper tread pattern
MUCK/SNOW=skinny wheels/tyres, tons of tread
just a rough guideline, but gives you an idea.....
