  • Dodgy Upshifting Box

I seem to have picked up a fault with my gearbox (2.4 92 auto). It will downshift ok, but seems to upshift like a slipping clutch. Obviously it hasn't got one of those! Any ideas?

I've got no power loss, or noises from the box and gear selection is fine. It doesn't seem to make any difference with ECT on or off, or O/D on or off. Normally, I have O/D and ECT on all the time.I'm just off to my local auto box specialist to try and get a diagnosis. I fear this may get expensive!

Have you checked the auto box fluid level.

As far as my knowledge goes the box works on fluid pressure and if you have a lack of fluid then it effects the gearchanges.

    Hope this helps.

Flush the fluid 3 or 4 times, especially as you just been offroading you might have cooked the fluid. But you could have fried one of the clutch bands, they are usually adjustable from bolts and lock nuts on the outside of the box.

Can you explain it a bit more... think mine does the same under heavy acceleration.

Not quite sure what you mean. Buit if you mean the upshifts are there but slow - ie it takes longer than a second to change from one speed to another, then it sounds like lack of hydraulic pressure to the brake bands - or the bands themselves are slipping. Is it all gears - that would suggest not the brake bands as its unlikely they would have all failed together. So it suggests hydraulic pressure - possibly blocked valve chest filters (caused by overcooking one brake band) or low fluid. If fluid level is OK - remember to check when hot and on level ground, then drain the gearbox sump about 2 literes I think and pop the bottom off the transmission and clean the filter. Only be very careful not to let any dirt in - at all - ever. There are threads on here about doing that job.

Good luck - Don't think you'll fix this with a cable tie.

          Cheers

          Kev

Right a better explaination - When accelerating, it will shift from 1st to 2nd ok, but 1st seems to disengage, then a momentary loss in power, and the engine sounds and feels as if a clutch is slipping. Then it will engage 2nd and normality returns until it changes to 3rd with the same symptoms.

The locking torque convertor is working ok.

            O/D is working correctly.

It seems to be behaving itself at the moment. I'm driving around with ECT off and I've had no problems. With ECT on, its done it a couple of times since Sunday.

I'm going to give it to autobox specialists to do a fluid change/service, as I really cant be arsed or am that mechanically minded. He wants £80. So its not a fortune to get it done.

              Auto 'box.

If it ends up being the ECU, I have one for the auto 'box on a 2lte engine.

Sorry to grag this up Dan but what happened as mine is behaving like this since Salisbury!????
Almost feels as if the brakes are on making it shift slow but it coasts fine?

Would like to know if you did sort it..

Think it was water ingress, somewhere. Hasn't done it since tho! I got a local auto specialist to service the box and its been great.

Think theres a removable filter pan on the bottom of the box that you can take out and clean. Not sure tho.

                    cheers mate
i guess ill have to pull it out and clean the filter - it could prob do with a fluid change anyway.
