Oil filter change

I have been trying for 90 minutes to remove an old oil filter and relpace it with a new one. But it won't bloody budge. I bought a wrench from Halfords but it won't grip the old filter . I have taken off the plate under the wheel arch so access is not a problem. The wrench can't seem to get a good grip so I can't remove the old filter. Any tips or tricks out there !!!!!!!!!

before i had my surf if i had this problem used to knock a big old screw driver through the filter and use it to turn the filter, dont know if this works on a surf though.

I had heard that but told only to do it as a last resort. So I will try it only as a last resort ! Thanks !

the three pronged type filter wrench is suitable as the end of the filter is in line with the aperture in the wheel arch

the one pictured is from a u.s. site, but here are some similar.

check the size of the new filter first.

remember to smear clean oil around the the oil filter's oil seal b4 fitting, otherwise the rubber-seal can distort if installed dry.

I have a chain wrench exactly like the one in the picture and they are not long enough to grip a Toyota diesel filter.

I got one of those as well took off the original chain nicked next doors kids chain off their bike and fitted it to my chain wrench. Works just fine and goes round the filter a treat.

I changed my filter last week an it was very tight!. Hwoever put it on had a bionic arm. Had the same problem as there is not much room for manouvre. I used a screwdriver (as I have always done when the filters wont budge) and got it off but be careful as if the driver is too long you will not turn it.

It is a last resort. My new filter is now only hand tight.

I've got a 3 pronged one like Simon posted, and I'm driving past Reading on Monday, If I can drop it off somewhere near the M4 you can borrow it and post it back or wait till I'm passing again.
