Why and how? Two batteries.

I have just bought a 3.0TD for its load space, and I am wondering a) Why does it have two batteries and b) How are they connected. They *look* to be in parallel and I was wondering is it just a way of getting a bit more cranking power for that big diesel, or is it something altogether more involved?

Yeah, its to save having one big battery.

As Tony said, save having to have one big battery, allows two cheaper and smaller ones. They are connected in parallel with equal charge going to both all the time (rather than a proper split charge system). Provide 12Volt but high current unlike Diesel Landcruisers which have 24V starting and 12V running which allows a smaller starter motor to deliver the same power.

I only ask because after reading so many posts mentioning them, when i bought mine and popped the lid open....there's only one. And its obvious there has only ever been one in there.

It's no big deal. Two batteries is part of the winter pack option. Just a few more Amps for those cold mornings. You might find you don't have the rear heater, heated seat and heated door mirrors.

My heated seats come on if the cabin temperature drops below 5C. I was blaming the curry!
The heated door mirrors come on with the heated rear screen.
I've got the diesel fuel pre-heater too, which probably explains why I can get away with nearly 100% vegoil in this cold weather. I must admit, I need to wait until the keys alarm comes on before starting and she's a little lumpy for a moment or two but purrs away after a short warm up.
