Now that's sound advice, ignore the dash-light, sit and listen for the relay, the sound seems to come from the passenger foot-well. arh

    Glow plugs.

On my old Surf I used to ignore the light and listen for the relay to click off. Learned that on my old Escort van, don't rely on the light!

    Glow plug

also check the voltage at the glow plug relay mounted on the inner left fender. My Surf is the same year and model of yours. I am currently diagnosing glow plug issues with mine. If the engine is warm at all the glow plugs only come on for a fraction of second. Cold they are on for 20 or more seconds. Which is completely normal ( i think). The dash glow plug light seems to work independently of the glow plugs actually having voltage, always 2 or 3 seconds on hot or cold so i think i am going to install a light from the wire that goes to the rail. I installed new glow plugs last winter and I think i may have one or to faulty ones now as cold starting is horrible. When its warm it fires right up and purrs like a kitten. I would be glad to compare tests and assist you where I can.

As above. Check glow plug fuse. If blown check glow plug rail is properly insulated.

    Nev.

Is there a fault with the wiring circuit ( broken wire or connection missed when the head went on ), possibly the glow plug fuse has blown, think it's an 80amp one
