  • New charging system for my Batteries

As some of you may be aware I have a bit of a passion with vehicle electrics and toys to go in the wagon. The existing systems allowed me to link / charge the two main batteries, in addition allowed for the charging of the Auxiliary battery which powers the radios etc while the vehicle is turned off. The new systems are basically add-on modules to the existing bits, and like them the are designed and made by me.

A digital display indicates battery voltages individually selected or the main battery as default.

Now all of the accessory power for CD player CB, UHF, Scanner etc all comes from one place and is selectable between the vehicle power if engine is running or auxiliary power.

The very cool part is the solar panel which charges each or all of the batteries. At 50mA it is not a lot however it is enough to tickle the batteries while parked for extended periods.

The third power supply is a charge input that will run in parallel to the solar panel and allows the vehicle to be plugged in to any “home” 230VAC supply, this provides up to 1A charging if required.

The standby power supply/jump starter in the back is still there and I hope not to need it in a hurry!!

All in all I now have a lot of power going all over the place and the ability to do almost what I like with it.

    Simon.

I'd love to see some pictures / wiring diagram. Also like that post on the electric fan rewire/replacement.

Going to have to start calling you boffin

    Or "The Prof".

    Well done M8.

    Cheers

What you need is the onboard power that is fitted in the new Dodge Ram MV. Has a generator between the gearbox and engine, acts as a generator or an engine depending on what is required - as an engine helps to reduce the horrendous fuel economy of the dodge ram, as a generator it charges the batteries and also gives a large output for running things such as radios and other military field equipment. Pity it's 110V but heh you can't have everything.

        Cheers

Photos may be a while away as my digicam is not doing waht it is told, Hmmmm sounds just like HER!
I can flick the wiring diagrams to you in a PM, just have to wait until I get back to work because all my data is on the company server. Ya gotta love big company servers, access at any station in the country!!!!
If you are ok at soldering and putting electronic gear together in modules then this may interest you.
          Cath ya all soon.

            Simon.

that would be great. I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron (One good thing that working as an engineer for British Telecom taught me). No problem with putting electronics together - I built my own computer once back in the days when you used to have to build and solder everything up from a custom made motherboard, solder the chips and components on etc.

            Cheers
