  • New glow plugs - still hard to start?

    Hi all,

First post for my new surf. Just bought it yesterday. No where near as tidy as my last one (that was a fresh Jap import), but this one should do the job. It's a 1992 2.4 Manual SSR-X.

I bought it from a friend of a friend....who said he had 4 brand new glow plugs replaced the morning that I bought the car from him. However, this morning was my first time starting her from cold - and she was a bit*h to get going. Assuming - maybe naively - that the glow plugs are brand new, what else can I check? The batteries? - although it was cranking away, so it wasn't like trying to start a car when your battery is dead and nothing happens?

    Any advice much appreciated!! Thanks

    -Ben

Is there voltage present at the plugs? (Ignition on)
Check the glowplug fuse if not.

Thanks Vince - silly question maybe but I have never seen a glow plug...Is there a handy terminal to connect voltmeter to or how does it work?

There's a stud on top of manifold under the intake from turbo to intake elbow. That's where the wires and terminals are connected to the stud with insulators. Don't short anything to the stud. No voltage there and fuse may be blown. Fuse box needs to be removed and turned over to replace fuses.

        Nev.
