Is it buggered? I have tested the batteries as prescribed above and the belts seem ok, I can't see anything obvious with the connector. So my question is are there any fuses or fusible links connected to it or is it knackered. Its been starting normaly all day then just pulled up outside the shop then nothing as if the batteries have gone flat!

What happens when you turn the key to start the engine, nothing at all or a clicking sound?
With the engine running, connect a multimeter to the battery terminals and rev the engine slightly, the voltage should read 14 ish volts. If the voltage doesn't increase then it's either the fuse or the alternator.
There's a big square fuse in the box under the bonnet labeled ALT. To remove it you'll need to turn the fusebox upside down to access the fixings that hold the fuse in place.
Test for continuity in the fuse first though, as they can sometimes develop hairline cracks in the link resulting in an intermittant charge getting to the battery/ies.

Cheers handy info. I have just had one of the batteries off to charge it and thought I would just give the belts a bit of a "tweak" they are now at full stretch and still a little loose I would say. I will get some replacements this week, as a matter of interest I put the battery back on and jump started it. The batteries both read 12.2 volts at tickover and 13.5 volts on "idle up" couldn't try any higher revs (not enough hands and nobody about to lend me one). Is this about ok or still a tad low?Old enough to know better but then again.....

How old are the battery/ies?
Do the same test but with everything switched on e.g. headlights, heater blowers, rear demister etc.

I have no idea how old the batteries are! will give it a try with every thing switched on in the morning when I go out to work. Rear de mister dosn't work neither does the rear wiper I'm guessing that those faults are connected , but thats another story! What is frustrating me though is the interior lights or lack of them, niether rear or middle work, they have new bulbs. Any suggestions it must be a common fault.Old enough to know better but then again.....

Mine play up sometimes in the 3rd gen. Give the switches a wiggle (with the door open) and see if they light up.
Check the 'Dome' fuse is OK.

Batteries are 2.2V per cell so you need more than 31.2V to charge them. 13.5 will barely add any charge to them. Test batteries (individually) while cranking the engine. If they drop below 10V then they are no good. Sometimes if you try one battery or the other, the vehicle will start because the bad battery has been isolated.
Nev.

After sorting this problem I decided to put some new belts on. In the mean time it stopped charging at Idle dash lights coming on (battery, fuel filter and a/t temp) for some reason I fitted the belts this evening because these lights had become a permanent fixture (what a complete pain in the arse of a job in the dark and rain) and hey presto no difference not even if revved not showing on voltmeter or with a multimeter direct to the batteries. The lights will go out if I pull the 7.5a fuse under the bonnet but it still dosn' charge. any suggestions?Last edited by The Boo Crew; 31 October 2013, 00:28.Old enough to know better but then again.....
