  • 4wd indicator bulbs ???? type what they called?

    hi there

    I have a P- reg 3rd gen kzn185

the 4wd indicators not working.... had the dash out and the bulbd / holders are missing in the three slots for the 4wd indicator area....

problem is these holes for the holders are smaller than the other bulbs & holders

can someone educate me as to what these bulb holders are called & or size and wattage of required bulbs etc

are they generic or specific to Toyota etc?

    thanks
    paul

        mine was the same.
i cut some standard bulb holders down but not an ideal fix.

when you replace them i bet they will flash as your 4wd isn't working.

i went to a friends garage and went through about 20 instrument clusters . the three you need are special sizes .
either toyota (not very helpful here) or find someone breaking one.

put them in and yup your right they are indeed flashing..... or the rear wheels and centre diff flashing front wheels not.....

chances are the control solonoid on the back of the transfer box is in need of fixing.
the electric motor magnets come loose and stop it working or it can seize up also not a mammoth job but a little fiddly.

if you have any problems i can tell you how i fixed mine and refitted it.
drop me a message and i can give you a ring i hate typing.
                if you get stuck.

to remove the unit you will probably need to drop the front of the fuel tank .

you will need to check the vacuum pipes before getting your spanners out two solonoids on the passenger side inner wing . the pipes are colour coded

                http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au/techsite/add.htm
that's the same system on a land cruiser slightly different to the surf but it gives you an idea how it works.( i know it says 4runner)

if the magnets have come detatched you will need some araldite .

                    Hi Nige

well the magnets were loose so now been araldited in place,
apparently local mechanic has tried the vacuum hoses etc and and its all good and front end lockis into 4wd .... but wont do it from the lever in the motor..... believe the 4wd ecu is ok....we thinking it must be the wiring somewhere now.....
don't have any decent 4wd or auto electricians near em here at all

there is a Toyota dealer in Dundee...might have to bite the bullet and see if they willing to take on

did he strip the unit and free off the motor and the control disc in the bottom of it ?

need to make sure it makes the right noises when you operate the 4wd lever and button . motor should spin the control disc and tell it what to do.

there is a disc in the bottom of the unit . probably needs cleaning and the contacts too. it gets water in when the breather pipe falls off and only has minimal lubrication from the transfer box.

another common thing is the shaft sticks. if that is stuck you have to remove the unit and work it in and out to free it off.

well come to a halt here im stuck

we think or the local garage has tried 12v on the motor etc all spinning and appear to work..... glued the magnets on back transfer box as suggested put vacuum on the hoses and the diff/ hubs lock in ao everything appears to be working
you switch to 4wd and the lights stop flashing for a couple seconds then just flash again ....everything on its own appears to be working but just no "signal" getting thru

local Toyota garage wont touch it ..... don't have decent auto electrical local either

mmmmmm hav eot figure out or find someone who can

if all else fails take the unit off and strip it.
there are electrical contacts in the bottom that get covered in muck .
there should be 4 prongs that contact the rotor to tell the solonoids what to do.
without stripping it and cleaning it you can't be sure it is ok.

you could remove the bottom plate and look inside . if it drops apart don't panic.
it is really easy to reset .
if it drops apart remove the little plate on the top of the unit and remove the small gear.
turn ignition on and cycle through the 4wd system . you should hear it spinning .
put it back into 2wd and wait for it to stop then replace the gear.

the only other thing that happens is the shaft that goes into the transfer box can stick. if that is the case then the unit will have to be removed and the shaft worked in and out until it is free. remember where it was when you took it apart. i think it is all the way out but not 100% on that.
to remove the unit you will have to drop the front half of the fuel tank.
