  • Starting issues

Hey folks i have a starting issue on my kzn130, basically every now and then but more recently the car will turn over a couple of times and then just die the starter motor sounds good but it won't turn over more than a couple of times, so i give the car some thinking time roughly 20-30 mins go back and it starts first time no probs

AA done a battery test, said there both good he mentioned it could be the starter motor on the way out.

    Anyone else agree with this?

Been advised on the forum to try a basic repair kit rather than a new motor
    Yes it's a V8, don't you know I'm loco?

Do you mean the starter stops working briefly? If its not turning the engine over give it a thump with a hammer and try again.

No the engine is turning and sounds good just it stops suddenly then if I keep trying the batt starts loosing the power
I think it possibly could be the starter motor connections in the motor?

Could be the starter but it sounds to me like its locking up because there is water in the cylinders. Put a rag in the exhaust when you start it, if the rag is wet and full of soot you have a problem.

Well water in the cylinder would mean a cracked cylinder head. However if its starting later on then its less likely. If you hold the key for a while does it not start turning again?

My dad did have this problem years ago on a Volvo but never found out what it was.

You could get a reconditioned started from a local motor-factors and return it if it didn't solve the issue.

not sure because i have an immobilizer so each time it stops turning the immobilizer kicks in and i have to take the key out do the immobilizer then try again but every time i repeat this it turns over until the battery gets tired just takes 20 mins to decide when its gonna carry on turning and start lol originally it only done this when the engine was hot i.e. i ran the car for 30 mins stop for diesel and when i try to start again i won't, but now its doing it when its cold as well

You need to take them out, put a wire from the battery into the top tip of the plug and put an earth wire from the battery to the thread on the plug, or touch the thread against the negative battery terminal. The end of the plug should glow red hot with no more than a few moments delay.

Before you start shelling out on unneeded parts, have you considered the fault may lie with the actual immobiliser?

If the starter motor can spin the engine over quick enough to start then it probably is not the starter motor.

I very much doubt that if you can drive for 30 mins to refuel then the starting issue occurs again , that it is the glow plugs, unless your fuel station is above the Arctic Circle.

Is the immobiliser factory or aftermarket?

Thats an interesting take, no it hasn't crossed my mind that its the immobiliser but yea ill try to look into it, god knows how thou?

point taken about it not starting when hot suppose theres not much need for the plugs when the engines roasting

                        thanks

So just to clarify the non starting is random and will start from cold ok?

See if you can see where the immobiliser is and trace out the wiring and disconnect it.

No hints given as to where it should or could be to, lets not give the thieving scum bags any help.
If tracing out the immobiliser worries you then you will have to rely on the skills of an auto electrician.
Get them to isolate the immobiliser and see if that solves your problem.
