  • How to test fuel gauge?

    Hi all,

I made a mistake when I fitted my Plasma dials and caught a cable against the fuel gauge needle, and then nudged the needle correcting it. Is there some way I can put some current across the fuel gauge terminals to check it's working before I put the thing back together, and if so, what values should I be getting from the sender if the tank's full?
Edit: just tested it and got 11.64v between 'F' and '-' from the dash wires.

Incidentally, I discovered a very quick way to get the clocks out, I'll post a how-to if people are interested

    Cheers,

Guess I need to apply logical thought BEFORE I go pestering people for help. Sorry!
Just reset the gauge to zero, plugged it in and started the engine, and bingo, gauge rose to full. Got a bit confused because the gauge is a sticky one (i.e. doesn't drop to zero with power off).
    Hope this helps someone else!

A how-to would be nice please.

      Glad you got sorted.
I've got a plan and it's as hot as my pants!

Whilst you were in there did you notice if the tacho could be removed independantly to other gauges, think I buggered mine doing what you just did.

          Bazza,

From what I can tell, all the gauges share a common 'backplane' (the blue flexible circuit board) but are otherwise all removable - a common mod is the temperature gauge, which involves removing the gauge unit, so I'd envision the tacho to be perfectly removable too. It'll likely be held in by three or more screws from the backplane. Beware on refitting, since as far as I can tell, these screws also carry the signals.
