  • Odd door wiring problem...

Anyone know the difference between the wiring loom in a 4 runner drivers door to that of a gen 2 surf?

No, but if you said what the "odd" problem was, I'm sure someone would try to help you.

      Well....

I recently replaced the drivers door on my 1992 surf with one from a 4 runner of the same colour and the central locking stopped working on the drivers side key, but still worked on the door button...

What was the reason for replacing the door loom in the first place?

I think he replaced the whole door complete with loom. Unless you know the CL worked perfectly on the donor car I would suspect a knackerd wire in the replacement door loom, or a knackerd micro switch on the drivers door lock.

The question was actually to see if anyone knew specifically because:

I replaced the door completely including the loom because the bottom of the old door had rotted all the way through.

            Process went as follows:
            1. Get 4runner door from LordLucan
            2. Put hilux door in passat by lowering front seats, tilting hilux door through front passat door and somehow getting it into the boot, then raise front seats again
            3. Get home, take off old door, place new door on car
            4. Remove old tinted glass from old door
            5. Recoonect all wiring
            6. Test all works
            7. Central locking fails in key
            8. Replace entire locking mechanism from OLD door back into new door
            9. Central locking still fails
            10. Trace all wiring in the new loom
            11. Find the loom has a diferent set-up on the 4 runner to the surf by seemingly 2 wires
It would appear that the 2 wires from the microswitch in the lock go to different wires on the door plugs just inside the cab on the 4 runner door loom, whereas on the old surf loom they join to the same wires as the door lock button just under the door console. So... a little bit of cut/extend/join and it all now works.. but I was wondering if anyone knew why they were separate on the 4runner, but joined on the surf.

Even more strangely... The 2 wires I 'cut' and joined to the be the same as the surf and now no longer go to the connector don't seem to have broken anything else.. ..

              I think there's a clue within 7, 8 & 9 in your list.

Well, yup... that was why I did it - even after checking the microswitch operation with a multimeter (just to make sure I wasn't going mad) I decided to rip open the tape on the wiring loom, and lo and behold - it's subtley different for seemingly no apparent reason... I guess the central locking controller on the 4runner must have different inputs....

                Just seemed really odd!

Do you know that the C/L module is working OK is what I meant.

CL module seemed ok before I changed the door/door loom over and all seems to be working now I have made my slight wiring change. Checked the old loom and it is definitely different with the door switch and microswitch on the lock hard wired together - wiring colours are different too on the looms. I checked the connections where the surf loom joins to make sure it wasn't someone elses fix job on the original loom, but the connections seem to be exactly like the other factoer ones on the rest of the car where 2 wires join in a "t".

Ho hum, it seems to work ok now, just wondered if anyone knew.

One door from a car with CL, the other door from a car with remote CL?

                        DP:

The more I think about it the more I think that's the reason for the difference. The 4Runner probably didn't have remote locking, but your Surf will have - even if you no longer have the fob.

Seems like a pretty solid theory to me. Makes perfect sense that you wouldn'twant the door switch locking the doors and turning on the alarm, so it would be on a seperate pair of cables.

That would mean however, that the 4Runner WOULD have had central locking, but the Surf did not

                          Thanks for your input

both Surf and 4runners have central locking. The remote option would have been added at the module not the loom.

No, both would have central locking. Only the Surf would have the remote option. It was only a theory. Unless the receiver/control module is fitted in the drivers door on a Surf it would require a change in the loom. Never looked to be honest - mine still works.
