  • Dual battery set-up & a winch

OK. has anyone set-up a winch on a Surf with the Winter Pack (twin starter batteries)?

I'm about to wire up all the auxiliary goodies we have to go in the car. This includes a Bushranger shower, spotlights, Compressor, Winch, Fridge, LED lights and chargers for laptops, cameras and phones. We have an Odyssey PC1500 battery and a split charge system to take care of the extras.

Most of the wiring is straight forward as it doesn't draw much with the exception of the winch.

The amp-draw on the winch under full strain and a loaded car is 415A. I've read on a few sites that most people use 35mm˛ welding cable. This cable generally is only good between 200A - 250A. I understand that 415A is the extreme maximum our winch will draw and often it will be much less, but I'd rather be on the safe side.

I'm planning on using some of this...

which is rated up to 415A, so should be sufficient. Does anyone have any experience with this, is this over-kill as it's frickin' expensive?

My concern comes with having 3 batteries (2 starters and 1 house deep cycle). The split charger has an over-ride option to link all the batteries for things like winching and self-jumping. I can replace the split charge system wiring with the heavy duty cabling, but what about the 'in-parallel' starter battery wiring?

When the winch is in use, I'm guess it will draw power equally from all 3 of the batteries, so if the standard loom between the two starter batteries can't handle the Amps, will it fry?

I notice you have not logged on since the date off the post, so I am not sure how much you want an answer....

I have no technical answer to your post, but I have travelled a bit.

Now this is only my personal opinion (plus others I have met while traveling)

A winch looks cool....but that's about it when overlanding.

It's crying out to be stolen.

If you are stuck most of the time you will have nothing to tie the winch to.

It weighs a lot, adding to your already loaded truck.

Most of your trip will be on good roads or good dirt tracks.

When traveling self preservation kicks in and when your given the choice of a road lasting 50 miles or a truck breaking track lasting 10 miles the road wins every time. Off roading is fun when your close to home with friends and an AA card....but on your own in unfamiliar terrain....well...

You want the truck to last the whole trip so why risk it by putting yourself in bad situations?

You can still off road..just choose enjoyable trails..after all your supposed to have fun.

I have found that if you do have a problem locals will appear from nowhere to help.

Save your money for the trip...a winch is not cheap.

As I say...you may disagree....it's just what I have found..
    .... Which was nice.

That's very sound advice... I've been considering fitting a winch, but after reading your info as an experienced overlander, I think I'll take your advice and spend the money on something else... for the truck of course. Thanks !

Cheers for the thumbs up.... I know it's not often I sound sensible...

Best buy for the truck is an Engel fridge.... Can't beat a cold beer...eerrrrr I mean water.......they come up on ebay, but not often. Buying one new is mega bucks. Don't be tempted by a cheaper Waco fridge.

Thanks for the replies. I hadn't logged in but I check the site on a daily basis at work as a guest, also the email notifications help.

The winch is a security measure really. Some of the areas we are travelling are fairly remote and after seeing the boggy conditions in Mongolia and Eastern Russia on the main roads I'd rather play it safe. I also need some weight up front to level out the saggy arse

Anyway....any thoughts on the wiring question?
