courtesy lights

Hi all

I've had a search round,but can't get my head around this one.
My coutesy lamps do not light off the door,.They will light in the on position.
I took the lamp down and put a bulb tester between the body shell and one side of the connector,and this is live,the other is dead untill I shut the door,and then goes live. The truck has got a clifford concept 300 alarm that is supposed to light the lamps on entry.
If someone could explain this to me I'd be very gratefull.

Hi all

Sussed it!!

I had dry contacts,as per others here. Tightened up the rivits with an improvised mini anvil,a little spray of WD and presto!!
So one feed is permanent live and is earthed to the body when the switch is in the "on" position,the other wire provides an earth path when the door is open IE the contact closed,and goes positive when the contact is open IE the door closed, to switch the light off.
Just thought I'd post to help anyone else as dim as me
