Are you sure you haven't got a couple of WWII Japanese soldiers behind your dashboard?
      Oh, maybe not.

Missing WW2 Japanese Soldiers Denounced as Hoax
      by
      Danny Chan

A pair of Japanese soldiers hiding in the dashboard of a Toyota Surf since World War II has been denounced as a hoax by the Japanese government. The story of two alleged World War II-era veterans touched off a media frenzy in Japan and made headlines around the world, but after the two failed to appear, Tokyo declared the story a hoax.

Over 100 Japanese journalists and diplomats descended upon Cheshire after reports emerged that two Japanese soldiers ensconced behind a stereo for over 60 years were ready to emerge from their hideout. The octogenarians were discovered by a Hilux Surf forum member who identified himself as Mulishafan.

Mr Mulishafan said he had never met the two soldiers but had heard them shouting "Help" whenever he attempted to turn on his ancient stereo.
"I just thought it was my stereo speaking to me", said mensa member Mr Mulishafan, "but now I realise it was the roughness of my knob-twiddling that was causing them to cry out."

The two were members of a unit deployed in stereo installation towards the end of World War II. According to reports, they became separated from their unit and later chose to settle within the dashboard in preference to the much smaller accomodation available in Japan.

Residents of Cheshire have long been aware that some Japanese soldiers had avoided surrendering to the allies and instead concealed themselves in SUV's and other appliances exported to Britain. Hehache Tao, a descendant of a Japanese soldier, said his grandfather had told him stories of the two stragglers under the backseat of a Nissan Skyline who lived on bits of takeaway that fell between the seat pads, but said they had both died due to morbid obesity.
In early June, a report emerged that claimed an elderly man found in the door pocket of a Lexus was also a former Japanese soldier. However Bert Baxter, 86, was unable to speak Japanese but was instead fluent in Black Country dialect. Walsall police and the Japanese embassy quickly refuted the claims, further disappointing journalists in the region covering the story.

Records from Japan’s army ministry indicate only 3,000 of 12,000 men in the 30th Division returned home; 80 per cent were listed as hiding in various exported vehicles and electrical appliances.

In 1974, a former Japanese soldier was found hiding in a fridge in Tooting. Hiroo Onoda, a former intelligence officer in the Japanese army, was unaware that the war had ended. The army lieutenant, armed with a rusty soup spoon, sometimes stole Rice Krispies from the kitchen cupboard to survive, though refused Pot Noodles. He emerged from hiding only after meeting a Japanese student camped out in a nearby microwave. Mr Onoda allowed himself to be photographed by the startled student, who in turn alerted officials in Tokyo the next day about his discovery.
The following year, the student returned with government authorities, including Mr Onoda’s former commanding officer who persuaded him the war had ended 29 years earlier. Mr Onoda, now 83, emerged from the salad crisper. and returned to Japan but later emigrated to Brazil after complaining of nut fatigue.
The last known World War II-era straggler was found in the cutlery rack of a dishwasher in 2010.
