  • dash wa rning lights gone and no start

    Hi all,

It is my first post so be gentle. i have '92 2.4 TD Automatic. it was fine untill battery died, i have charged it up but only lasted 5 minutes of driving when turned engine of it didn't start. i have replaced the battery and was fine for 2 days. now I've started it fine drove to the garage to get some diesel, put the key in ignition and no warning lights. only handbrake which wasn't on and seat belt lights lights. went to start it and it turns the starter fine but wont start. what can it be?? i have found similar but not same posts so it might be alternator fuse but want to check. i will take it ti garage on monday as it needs to work before Wednesday. please help.

I am not the most experienced with the surfs as only had mine about a month, but have you checked the battery terminals are done up as if they are loose some of the attaching wires may not be connecting correctly? this happened to me years ago in a car that i was nursing around with no money so charged one battery while the other was on the car ad vice versa, i was lazy and just push fitted the terminals, took me 2 days to figure out why the car cut out every few miles then started again!!!

if you dont get a reply, maybe post in the general section that you have an urgent query in here as most visit there regularly and i am sure someone will be able to advise of other more technical solutions, fuse could also be a issue?

Alternator and/or loose battery terminals. But the dash light thing you speak of, generally points to a fcuked alternator.

Out of interest, would it not still start if the alt was knackered and just kill the battery very quickly like has happened so may well be an issue to?

if you have a volt meter check batt voltage when its running should be around 14v if its lower the alt isnt charging. if thats the case check the 100amp alt fuse in the fuse box under the bonnett on driver side that might have blown if it has change it and check voltage again. if it has blown though have a look at your earth straps there is a big one on the passenger side engine mount bracket.under the power steering pump, dont just look at them shake it might have a bad earth, agreed with above posts aswell as to check the connections make sure there tight. if still no joy after that let us know.

thanks for all the replies. i have been playing for 3 days now with all the wires, i have sprayed everything with wd40 and still nothing. the 100 amps fuse is not blown either. it must be an alternator as on thursday after doing about 40 miles the battery died and all dials gone crazy, lights were flashing but the car was still driving so in my opinion the alternator was dieing then . would the car still go with flat - dead battery if the alternator was dead? anyways i have towed it to the mechanic (great fun) who will have a look tomorrow and he advised me over the phone that the way it is wired up in hilux is that the dash wires are connected via alternator (more liely) so i guess thats where the fault is. like i said i am not mechanic so apart from shaking the wires i cant do much. cheers. i'll post the mechanic diagnosis later.

If you don't get the alternator light on with the ignition on check the fuse inside the truck drivers side near your feet/bonnet release catch think its 7A fuse. When my alternator went I still had the alternator light along with a few others but if I pulled this fuse it went out.
If the battery is charged you can still use the truck. If it doesnt start with a charged battery as said check treminals and earth.

well, i have taken it to the mechanic and so far i know the following: alternator is dead indeed, it gets very hot and is not charging the battery. it didnt start as had air in fuel filter (which was above dirty) and air in some fuel pipes. now, i have been told by mechanic that it is not serious but told by someone else that there might be a hole somewhere in fuel tank or suction pipes.. who's wright? i dont have an update on dash warning lights though. will wait till tomorrow. and does anyone have spare alternator???

The air may or may not be an issue, get the electrics fixed first.

The dash lights will fix themselves when you fit a working alternator.

Air gets into the fuel at the primer head, on top of the fuel filter.
Pump the plunger as see if there's resistance after a few pumps, if not then the diaphragm is split and you'll need a replacement primer assembly.

hi all, hope u had good Christmas!!! well i have some updates. the beast is now starting (air in fuel system more likely due to running low on fuel)
New (working second hand) alternator fitted and still nothing. the new battery is faulty. it was charging different battery for a moment but now back to square one. charging relay checked, fuses checked. what is going on. any one have a charging circuit diagram? my mechanic cannot find anything on his system (bare in mind he is part time mechanic so may not have all the access). i need help i need the thing running again. please

I'm totally lost now, does the engine start or not??
Is the alternator giving out 14 volts when the engine is running??

                          This help?

engine is running. alternator is giving on average 10V but it was tested before was installed. could something else cause the issue?
