I take it in ICE circles, no-one bothers much about imagery or soundstage?

The serious ones do - Usually one set of tweeters up front (often mounted on the a pillars) with a 6.5" mid mounted low in the doors. Seriously deadened outer and inner door skins with all holes in the inner skin sealed over. Usually crossed to the sub around 60 - 80Hz. The very serious people use time alignment to even out the path lengths to the speakers. Best result with a fully active system.Originally posted by Apache View PostI take it in ICE circles, no-one bothers much about imagery or soundstage?
The a pillar tweeter thing works very well in the car environment. You'd have to hear it before you'd believe it as coming from a hifi background (tweet as close to the mid as humanly possible) it just seems wrong.

Can't you read? It's SECRET!!
Agree re. the single tweeter and mid. Also re. the active comment. Easier to design precision into an active X-over, and easier to tweak! Also easier to present a consistent load to the driver from a power amp with reduced reactance in the way. For the same reason, better instantaneous power delivery to the driver.
When I was at ARCAM (nee A&R) I designed an active system for the Arcam 1 speakers I was running at the time, using a bridged pair of their own P200 power amps in each. Sounds like overkill - but they were available to me. The dynamics and immediacy was jaw dropping (the speaker designer agreed) and there are some tracks I've never since heard with such clarity of bass guitar lines. We did have a reasonable front-end to feed them with though. Sondek / Ittok(?) though I dont remember what cartridge was fitted, and a Meridian preamp. At home I used a Michell Syncro / Basik and home made passive preamp.
As active Arcam 1's would pan out around a grand, that would have put them up against some pretty stiff, well established hifi mag favorites (Mission 770s at £300 in 1985!!) so it was never persued and I had the only pair ever made until 1999 when I sold them to a pub for their sounds in the bar (!)

###### hell apache what don't you know when it comes to electronics???? Could never get my head around the component side of things but, saying that i have not been taught, it's what i've picked up through trial and error, but i would love to learn that side of things just a shame you're as far away as you areOriginally posted by Apache View PostCan't you read? It's what I do, and have done for nearly 30 years thats all. However, this weekend I found I'm absolutely shit at hanging interior doors!Originally posted by tonupteabag View Post###### hell apache what don't you know when it comes to electronics???? Well i can manage to hang doors and my weldings pretty damn good oh and i can build trikes, chops and most motorcycle related things ooh and i'm pretty damn efficient with spanners but all has changed due to accident and disability so looking for new careers and electronics is a follow on from the above in some perverse wayOriginally posted by Apache View PostIt's what I do, and have done for nearly 30 years thats all. I do 'bird shit' welding (as a proper welder called my last attempt) but I'd love to be able to weld properly.Oh Nana, what's my name?

Right then matey how would i go about learning the electronics side of things as down here in devon unless it's agricultural the college's aren't too well equipped and i'd also be a "mature" (said very loosely) student, I have previously looked into different trades, I was set for plumbing but got taken out due to the RTA and the ensuing difficulties, So idealy i need something i can sit when i have to and stand when i need to, Apart from that i am reliant on crutches still, So that poses it's own problems with employers insurance, plus i have found that a lot of employers would prefer able bodied people over someone with a disability, I know that employers have to take a certain percentage of disabled people but the rules are bent to suit the employers needsOriginally posted by Apache View PostWell there you go!
