  • 2 Ohm rear speakers solution

Rear speakers in my Surf were removed back in Japan and I know they are usually the weird 2 Ohm kind but I can't find any in shops over here. Electronics was never my strongest point but am I right thinking that two 4 Ohm speakers connected in paralel on each side would produce 2 Ohm load suitable for the small stock amplifier fitted in Surfs?

You are correct. That would work.

However, another option is to wire the internal amp in the rear speaker enclosure out of the circuit. If you cut the wires (one at a time) and place bullet connectors on them (so you can rewire them later - if you wish), you can connect the appropriate speaker outputs into the enclosure direct onto the speaker terminals. Replace the existing speaker with newer more efficient 4 ohm model.

Rear units in the 2nd gen are 4" units. If you cut the section that is proud of the main body, where the speaker mounts, you can get a 5 1/4" co-axial speaker in there. Anything upto some really big hitters... MBQuart Q series, Kicker Resolutions, etc... You can always mess with the "Q" of the enclosure by stuffing some open cell foam in there, and/or blocking off the port (and making sure the enclosure is really sealed).

All depends on what you want to achieve.

      The original ones are
(front) 4" paper cone all range speakers @ 4 Ohms fitted into an enclosure which is ported.
(rear) 5 1/4" all range speakers @ 2 Ohms fitted into an enclosure which is ported.

A pic of the rears can be seen on this site: http://www.showmesome.info/hilux/workshop/rear_trim.htm

I would add that I have the original rear speakers fitted and they sound very good with a Sony head unit. So to anyone thinking of replacing them I would try them out first. May save time and effort.

        Resistors in parallel rt = 1/r1 +1/r2 +1/r3 etc.
I once built some PA speakers that each had eight mid range drivers in. Poor mans Bose my mate called them. They didn't half kick though.
        It's only a hobby!

          I've just got my 93 3.0 ssr-x ltd surf,

Not replaced my head unit yet but plan to as soon as i can get my head round it all.

I was thinking of keeping my original back speakers but sounding proofing them, will that make much difference?

Also i took the centre rear ceiling panel off today after reading some of the posts about the 4 tweeters , only to find them missing .
Theres supposed to be two in the centre and two in the top corners of the side panels.
I can see one connection wire running to the centre with 4pins or two sets of two im not sure.
          can you help?
what would i need to do to get it sorted and is it worth it

          I would appreciate any advice

          Cheers
